Stealing a whole web site
When I was going to school in Florida, I started getting
guestbook entries addressed to Barb and had NO IDEA what they were talking about. Then my future "son-in-law" signed my
guestbook...well, that was enough for me. I wrote to him and asked him what he was talking about. He replied with there
must have been some kind of mix up on the guest book server because he had signed the guestbook on an "authentic" web page
his father had made for his fiancé as part of his engagement gift.
When I finally got the URL and looked at the site, it was an EXACT replica of my home page, the only think
he did was change the title at the top and the picture from me to her, and email link. It was my counter, my graphics, my
guestbook (which was on my own server might I add) and all my information and hard work. I nearly blew a head gasket. I
wrote them a letter and let's just say I was pretty upset and my words were not kind. Anyway...they wrote back and refused
to take the page down and couldn't understand why I was upset over a few extra hits on my counter and entries in my
guestbook. I lost it at that point. Wrote to anyone in any webrings I joined, everyone who had signed my guestbook,
created a new guestbook that linked from her site and relinked mine, and posted in egroups. Needless to say, a few days
later, the webpage was gone and so were they. They were forced to change their email addresses.
Unfortunately...if someone wants something on the internet, or access to it, if they want it bad enough...
they WILL find a way. Sadly...there are people sick enough out there to do it. These things happen rarely, considering the
number of webpages that are out there, and what your friend has to do is weigh the risks.
Huggers,
Dee
